There hadn't been a summer as bad as this since the long-forgotten winter
of the year before last, when the situation had gotten so extreme as to
be totally banal. But today, in complete contrast, the temperature was
off the scale for averageness, no-one thought to themselves. The last
time it hadn't rained like this . . . well, no one knew (or indeed cared)
if it had ever not rained like this before. It was only a matter
