He pushed it shut, and a pleased noise made him turn around with a start. Standing at the bottom of the left staircase was an old lady.

"Well!" she said. "It's nice to see you weren't raised in a barn! Not like some of the young men who come through here... leaving the door open, letting the heat out and the goblins in. It's so upsetting!"

Fred looked at her again. She was the magician's wife!

"In fact," she went on, "It upsets me so much that I just have to turn them into mushrooms to go in my stew."

She gestured at the vat.

"Would you like some?"

1. "There's no time for that! Your husband sent me to look for you and we've got to get back quickly."
2. "Maybe just a bite. It smells delicious!"
3. "Good god, woman, are you some kind of monster?!"
4. "No, thank you. I'm allergic to mushrooms."
5. Fred was too distracted to respond.
