Archers always break ranks and flee before a determined charge, Fred told
himself. So he jumped to his feet and ran at the anthropomorphic fox. Yet
even his best bloodcurdling roar and sword-swinging display failed to
stymie the creature, which loosed an arrow that struck Fred in the
shoulder. Fred continued his charge and swung at the fox, but she jumped
back just in time. "That arrow was a gift from my mistress." the fox smiled. "She expects to see you again... soon." And before Fred could do anything else, the fox bolted out of the arena. The announcer roared "What a ridiculously cowardly display! It seems Krystal the Elemental Sorceress not only left the arena herself, but her substitute has now fled as well! Our boy Red can go on to the semifinals! And just look how happy he is!" Fred managed a weak smile as the crowd cheered him on - a lot of them were on his side now. He pulled the arrow out of his shoulder. Its tip was coated with a strange green liquid, and for a second Fred worried it was poison. But oddly, he felt just fine - in fact, some of his energy was beginning to return. Deciding to worry about this later, Fred tossed the arrow aside and turned to face his next opponent.
