Mistaken Identity (Like this title hasn't been used before)

In a series of events that would have been incredibly amusing to anyone who
had seen it, Fred was picked up by an animal control van and taken to the
pound. Fred, being a former human, was angry, but held his temper, acting
like a nicely behaved dog. A nicely behaved dog which is obviously a fox.
Well, Fred found himself adopted by a loving family, and he was cool with
that, y'know? But he kinda wanted to get back to his human form, and he
hated the cat making passes at him, and the hyperactive border collie puppy
constantly stealing his chew toys in order to get Fred to play with him.
Now the situation with the cat was especially embarassing, because Fred was
a fox, not another cat. What did she know about dogs in her little feline
brain? She kept telling him "Meow, meow, prrrrow? Meow-ow? Wrrrrow?" which
meant "Am I cute yet? How about now? Is this endearing?"
Fred had to find a way to get back his human form and get back to his
quest. But he also didn't want to upset anyone in the family by having one
of their pets suddenly vanish. Fred knew what this was like, and he'd never
really gotten over it. Poor mittens. If that transmogrify spell hadn't
changed Fred's kitty back home into a catgirl, then she could still sit in
his lap when he had company.
