Fred and Astra decide that they have no reason to suppose that the
approaching party
will be hostile, so make no attempt to evade it. As it draws closer, they
see that it consists of about fifteen covered
wagons drawn by animals the like of which they have never seen before. The
creatures
are taller and more ungainly than horses, and seem to have looks of
contempt on their
faces. Oddest of all, they have a large hump on their back. There are a
number of outriders,
mounted on the same type of creature.
When Fred and Astra are spotted, the caravan comes to a halt. The outriders dismount, and cluster round the two of them. The dismounted men look at Fred and Astra; Fred and Astra look back at the men. They wear hoods that cover most of their faces as a protection from the sun and the sand. All Fred and Astra can see are their eyes and an inch or two of swarthy skin. One of the men speaks to them, but in a language they do not understand. Seeing their incomprehension, he switches to the Common Tongue, Fred and Astra's native language. Though his accent is rather strange, he speaks it well. "Who are you, and what are you doing on foot in such a remote place?" he asks them. Fred and Astra:
