A Wayside Inn

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 51970

"Fred," Astra said as they continued to ride along the track that they were following, "I wasn't altogether frank when I told you, soon after we first met, that I went on a quest to kill the dragon because his blood could be used to lift my curse. That was part of it, but in fact my family insisted that I must go. My enforced nudity was an embarrassment to them. By sending me to kill the dragon their problem would be solved, one way or another. Either I would succeed, and so would be able to lift the curse, or I would fail and would presumably be killed. Of course, they didn't allow for the possibility of the dragon getting me to go on a mission for him."

"I see. I can understand your not telling me that. We had only just met then... Hey, there's what looks like an inn up ahead. It'll be dark before long. Do you want to see if we can get rooms for the night, or would you rather carry on a bit further and then look for a good spot to make camp for the night?"

"You think that I might be embarrassed to enter the inn without any clothes? Thank you for your consideration, but I've become hardened to such things. A hot bath, a properly cooked meal and a comfortable bed for the night all sound very inviting. I haven't had any of those things for a long time. Of course, when they see me they may show us the door, so I won't get my hopes up too high."

Given that this was apparently a lonely spot, they had expected the inn to be very quiet, However when they entered, having first seen to the needs of their horse, they found that the single bar was quite busy. There must be a substantial village somewhere nearby.

Every face turned in their direction, and the hum of conversation was replaced by absolute silence until Fred addressed the innkeeper: "We would like two rooms for the night please, Landlord. Also two dinners, two tankards of your best ale and some food and water for our dog. And the lady would like a hot bath if that can be arranged."

  1. The innkeeper is obliging.
  2. The innkeeper makes a snide remark, but he isn't in the habit of turning business away.
  3. The innkeeper says: "We don't serve your sort in here."
