Frederica wasn't that pulling the levers would be such a good idea--why would the doctor place
her in a room that would be so easy to get out of? She knew that somehow she had to get out,
but this was just too obvious. On impulse, she pulled all three of the levers at once. She heard
weird screeching, creaking, crunching noises, and then a noise that sounded like distant singing.
Slowly, the door creaked open.
As it did, she was suddenly overcome by dizziness, slipped off her feet, and fell onto the wall. It was several minutes before she was able to stand up. She realized that the room had somehow re-oriented itself--what had been her horizontal plane was now vertical and vice versa. The door was an oblong window that looked out onto a vast desert landscape, with eroded towers of white stone sticking out of the sands. The place was eerie and desolate, with burning winds roaring between the towers. If she left the room and came here, would she be able to find any food? She might be placing her life--and the life of her child, she didn't want to think--at risk. But she thought back to the doctor, and the little girl's warning, and shuddered. She thought she heard the tread of footsteps coming to the door, hollow and indistinct. At that very moment, the little girl walked out of the massive archway of one of the towers and beckoned to her. Frederica clambered out of the door and ran off to the tower the little girl had ducked into, her heart beating so loudly it could probably be heard throughout the desert. She almost slipped on the sand several times, and the heat of the wind was too much to bear, but fear drove her on. And fear for her child. She knew that by the code of honor she'd always lived her life by, she had to protect it, even though on some level she feared it too. She ran into the massive archway of the tower, as white and dead as bone. At that instant, she heard the same noises she had when she'd pulled the lever. The metal cube which was her room was covered by a thick haze of movement and shimmered out of existance. While she wasn't sure how she'd done it, she'd escaped the unholy hospital. Now she had to find some place where she and her child would be safe. While the desert outside was burning hot, the tower was freezing cold. In the distance, she thought she heard laughter, light but malicious laughter, like that of a little girl.
