The Doomworm

Before he could take stock of his surroundings, the very ground shook, and Fred lost his balance. The ground erupted ahead of him, and the sun was blocked out by a huge armoured worm-like creature that was easily seventy metres high. Fred knew this creature as a doomworm, something far more deadlier then any dragon. Any form of weaponry or magic was useless against such a beast.

Doomworms weren't very friendly, and attacked anything foolish enough to enter its territory. Only winged creatures had any chance of surviving any encounter with it. Land-based creatures almost certainly had their fate sealed.

Fred waited for the end to come, but when it didn't, slowly opened his eyes and looked at the terrible maw of the creature. It was just hovering there, making no attempt to attack him. "What are you waiting for?" he yelled, as if expecting it to understand him. "Get it over with!"

Surprisingly enough, it did. Understand him, that is.

"I have no intention of killing you," it said in a deep bass voice that went right through him. "You are supposed to be a Dragonslayer, are you not?"

Amazed that such a creature could speak, or even know who he was, Fred merely nodded.

"Dragons cannot harm us, but they can still be a nuisance," it said. "It would be foolish of us to kill those who can do away with them."

Fred thought he now knew what the dragon's plan had been, for him to be killed by one of these fearsome creatures. Though it seemed to have backfired.

"So go back to the caves and do your job, and we'll let you and anyone who's with you travel these lands safely." The creature retreated back into the ground.

1. Frightened about going back into the caves again, but more afraid of the doomwooms, Fred headed back towards the Shreken.
