While they were contemplating this, a dark shape passed over them, and
they gasped when a large dragon landed in front of them. Bert made a start
to cast a spell against him. Fred put a restraining hand on his arm. "Stay
your hand, Bert." Bert looked at him in puzzlement. "I don't believe he's
going to harm us," Fred said. "That is correct, Lord Fred," the dragon said. Fred looked at the dragon in curiousity. "You sound rather young," he said. "How old are you? A hundred years, at least." When he got a snorted acknowledgement, he continued, "so what happened to your father?" "He was sleeping in his lair when he got hit by a large bolt of lightning." Fred looked astonished. "Caught unawares? How's that possible?" Poor old Bert was totally confused. "What's going on?" The dragon looked down at him. "Ah. I should have known you wouldn't have an idea about what's going on. Well..." He then told the story of when their world was created, there was a god who had seen fit to tie the stability of the world to certain repeating events that occured on it. In this case the Shreken Moutains were pretty central to one. In it, there was to be a dragon that dwelled in the caves there that was to periodically attack the countries to the north and south of the Shreken, namely Allaria and Aqualaria. These countries were then to send a warrior to battle the dragon. If the warriors were defeated, others were to be sent in their place. If the dragon was defeated, another would take its place. Recent events have caused a problem. The dragons weren't to do any lasting damage, just make a nuisance of themselves. "Now, since much of Allaria and Aqualaria has been destroyed, there's nowhere where I could be a nuisance. Even if there was, as I'm sure you already know, most of the remaining knights are protecting Caemlyn. There are none spare to fight me." "Do you know who - or what - is behind this?" Fred asked.
