Zalmo now deeply regretted giving his avarice precedence over his
customary cowardice - or at least he would have done if he wasn't too
frightened to think coherently. Having formed the (quite correct)
impression that the mercenaries he had hired intended to cheat him, he had
decided to come to the caves himself to check up on them. The mercenaries
had prudently left their wagon well concealed a little way away from the
entrance to the caves, so Zalmo hadn't seen it. Fearing that the
mercenaries might already have decamped with all of the treasure, he had
decided to go to the dragon's lair to check that the gold and jewelry was
still there, using the information on the layout of the cave system that
Velus had provided him with.
But now he was faced by some horror the like of which he had never imagined. Rubicon placed a grip of iron around his neck. He struggled ineffectually for a short while, before everything went black. Within another minute he was dead and the world was a slightly better place.
