Whilst Anne sulked, Fred headed back to the church. Perhaps someone had
seen Astra leave and could tell him which way she had gone. It was a long
shot, but he couldn't think of anything else.
By the time he got back to the church, it was late in the afternoon. It had begun to rain, and a chill wind had sprung up. The church had been locked up, and there was no-one around. He wondered what he should do. Meanwhile Astra continued along the dirt road, trying to dodge the muddiest areas, for its surface had deteriorated as she left the town further behind. Initially it had run through farmland, but now it led her through a forest. She was beginning to fear that she had somehow taken a wrong turning, for it should have taken her little more than an hour to reach the village and she was sure that she had been walking for more like two hours. She had encountered no-one on the road from whom to ask directions. Her slippers, not meant for serious walking, had more or less disintegrated and she had discarded them. Now her bare feet were muddy, her damp dress - its hem mud-spattered - clung to her and she was cold.
