"Aresia!" I exclaim. Damn, that wound looks awful. I'm a halfway decent
medic, but I couldn't hope to deal with something that serious. I move
quickly, checking Aresia' vitals with one hand while reaching for the
speeder's controls with the other. She's still alive, but her pulse is
weak. As I wrestle with the controls, trying to bring us to a stop, more
blasts erupt from the treeline. Fortunately these weren't as precise or
as powerful, but they're more than enough to knock out this rustbucket's
engines. The speeder hits the groud and skids a few hundred yards to a
stop, the nose half buried in the ground. I'm a bit knocked around, but
regain my composure in time to see several armed figures emerging from
the trees and cautiously closing the distance to us.
I spare a glance down at the unconscious Aresia. She won't last long without medical attention. Even if I could somehow carry her away from here, Faith is the only place I could reach on foot, and there's no guarantee our attackers aren't from there. Still, I gotta try. I grab her bag, (resisting the urge to look inside) sling Aresia over my shoulder, and hop out. I grab her sword too, it being the only weapon I've got at the moment. Not that a bloody sword is going to do me any good against guys with energy weapons, even if I wasn't carrying an unconscious girl on my back. I lumber away from the wreckage, but realize with a sinking feeling that there's no way I'm getting to cover before these guys catch up with us. I could make it if I left Aresia behind, but for some reason it never seriosuly dawned on me to do that. Funny, with her unconscious, she shouldn't have any mental hold over me. But, for whatever reason, I wasn't leaving her behind. So, I did what any hopelessly outgunned smuggler would do. "Look, guys, you don't want to kill me. I can make you a whole lot of money..." I say, turning to my pursuers with a wolfish grin and half expecting to catch a plasma bolt in the face. The armed men who brought down our speeder step into the moonlight, reveling themselves to be a trio of haggard-looking Seekers. "You have violated our holy ground, and for that you will...Wait...that sword!...You are a Keeper, then? Come with us."
