The Antidote

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 50874

A makeshift stretcher was quickly arranged for Astra, and then she was carried to the healer's dwelling and transferred to a bed in a comfortable room - not that she was in any condition to enjoy its comforts. Mendo and Fred had accompanied her. The healer himself had gone on ahead, in order that he might more quickly begin work on the antidote to the poison.

Over the next half hour the pain that Astra had been experiencing began to ebb away, replaced by a growing feeling of numbness. She realised that she could no longer move her arms or legs. "The healer had better hurry up with his antidote," she said, "or I may not be able to swallow it. I'm becoming paralysed."

"Here he comes now," Fred told her, relief evident in his voice.

Astra managed to swallow several mouthfuls of the potion that the healer had brought with him. The healer said that should be more than sufficient. "Now you must rest, and not try to talk any more," he told her. "You should make a full recovery. That will take several days, but your condition should quickly stabilise. I will stay with you for the next hour or so to check that it does. Sleep if you can. That will help speed your recovery."

  1. Astra's recovery goes as the healer has anticipated.
  2. The antidote is not as effective as the healer had expected. Perhaps Astra's different ethnicity from that of the locals is the reason.
  3. Whilst Astra sleeps, Mendo and Fred receive some news concerning the woman responsible for poisoning her.
