Preface to the 42nd Edition

The Celestial Rubber Corporation's Handbook of the Really Good Stuff, continuing the policy of the past, is being revised at frequent intervals.

The general features and scheme of arrangement, which have received extensive endorsement in former editions, have been retained. The aim throughout has been to present in condensed form as large an amount of accurate, reliable, and up-to-date information in the fields of alchemy, magic, and other arcane arts and sciences as was consistent with convenience in form and the possibility of wide use and distribution. In order to make it more accessible to the interested reader, we excise the boring and mathy bits as well as pages and pages of steam tables, which can be found in other references. We instead concentrate on topics of immediate practical interest. Such topics include materials purification, radical therapies for rejuvenation of human health, means and materials to influence and improve the human mind, among other subjects. Note that these matters are approached using the latest advances from leading practitioners in the relevant art, and subjecting these findings to strict peer review. This tome does not ape the sensationalist tone of the many slipshod and unprofessional pamphlets that are unfortunately all too common. Our aim is higher and more general than the transmutation of base metals into the gold, brewing the elixir of eternal youth, mind control, aphrodisiacs, invisibility potions, etc., although these topics by no means shunned. It is assumed that the reader is a professional in his or her craft, and that the moral and ethical aspects in the use of the material in this book are thought through thoroughly before proceeding.

  4. On the creation of variable refractive index gel and its possible applications in the visual arts, thermal enhancement or retardation, and as a camoflauging agent.
