Fred considered what the strange woman had told him. He knew that, if
there was any possibility at all that she was telling the truth, then he
could not kill her. To slay an unarmed woman without good cause would be
just about the biggest breach imaginable of the code of chivalry that he
had sworn to live by. He sheathed his sword.
The woman visibly relaxed a little. "I understand that it may be some time before I can fully gain your trust, if you have no memory of me," she said. "But consider this. If my story is not true, then how could I know your name and that you come from Allaria?" "I do not know. But if you are some creature of the Dragon, maybe even the Dragon itself using some shape-shifting enchantment, then perhaps you are able to read my mind." "To believe that would surely be a recipe for despair. For if the Drake and his creatures are that powerful, then what chance have you, a single knight, against them?" "Even if you are telling the truth, then I don't see that my situation is much improved. For you say that one or other of us must be under his enchantment even now. And if it is I who is ensorcelled, and what you remember happening to you is the truth, then by your own account the Dragon was powerful enough to toy with you. Why should I fare any better against him than you did?"
