"I hate to disappoint you," Fred said, "but most goblins don't wear clothes. So I don't think that it would be worth the risk of fighting them, especially when we don't know how many there are. They are formidable opponents, and I wouldn't care to take on more than two or three."

"I suppose that you are right," Astra conceded. "If only I had a sword then the odds would have been better. Perhaps we should go back across the lake, then? The far side was clear of this damnable fog, so at least we would be able to see what we were doing."

Fred and Velus agreed to this, and the three of them boarded the skiff. Astra volunteered to take the pole, having gained some experience of the technique that was required during her outward journey. She started to propel the skiff back across the lake.

  1. The fog cleared before long and they could see the far shore ahead of them.
  2. After ten minutes or so, Astra began to be concerned. There was no sign of the fog clearing. More importantly, she was sure that they should have reached the far shore by now.
  3. Something unseen thumped hard against the bottom of the skiff, overturning it and flinging them into the water.
