Astra and Hesht both became rather alarmed when they learnt that one of
the men would be camping by the ford. They knew that they could not afford
to remain in
hiding where they were for a prolonged period. Their situation
deteriorated further when Gordie began to walk towards the bushes where
they were hiding. It seemed likely that he would discover them in the very
near future.
Astra wished that she still had Hesht's knife, but of course Boomer's men had not allowed her to retain it. Ordinarily she would have backed herself against the man in unarmed combat - he did not look very fit - but without the use of her legs she would have little chance. Would deception be a better bet? Perhaps the people at the mill would not have been informed about Hesht and herself, and they would not be recognised. Peering between the leaves, she saw that the man had drawn his knife from his belt. Had he detected them? No, probably not, since he did not seem at all alert. He might be intending to cut some branches with which to start a fire, if he would be camping overnight. Perhaps there was a chance that he would find enough kindling without stumbling on them? With the light fading fast, he might not spot them amongst the bushes unless he came quite close.
