The two adventurers readied themselves for whatever creature might emerge
from the dense jungle undergrowth, pondering what sort of mayhem they
could unleash on it without the benefit of any weapons. (For Fred's sword
had fared no better than Astra's over the course of the last year.)
But when the owner of the eyes became visible, Fred and Astra got a surprise. For in spite of the unusual colour of the eyes, they did not belong to some fierce jungle creature but to a man. He was dark-skinned and wore only a skirt made out of leaves, but the most noticeable thing about him was that he was well under four feet tall. He was carrying a spear that was taller than he was. Then more people emerged from the undergrowth, and soon Fred and Astra were surrounded by spear-carrying pygmies - both men and women, for this was evidently an "equal opportunities" tribe. The pygmy whom Fred and Astra had seen first, who was evidently the leader, spoke to them.
