"I've grown rather accustomed to mud in recent days," Astra said. "And
I've got the lower part of my hose rather muddy already. I
can put up with a little more. I imagine that it will get too dark to
continue once the sun sets, and that we'll have to stop for the night, but
going a few extra hours without food won't hurt me. And I've had a drink
recently from that well that we passed. So let's avoid the mill and cross
the river by the ford. I want to minimise the risk of our being seen.
Boomer might have passed out my description earlier on, just in case I
should try to escape. If he has, then your ruse of me pretending to be
your sweetheart won't work. My hair and my height would give me away at
once."
"I d-don't think Boomer's very likely to have done that," Hesht replied. "Maybe not, but I don't want to take any unnecessary risks. Oh, just one more thing. I suppose that the river will still be fordable after all the rain that fell yesterday?" "I think so." So they headed for the ford. They met no-one on the way and did not think that anyone had seen them. They arrived there a little before dusk.
