"What happened?" Matthias asked. His whiskers were twitching as he looked
around rather dazedly. They were standing (apart from Carola, who was
lying on her back) on the rocky outcrop overlooking the road, where
Vaeren's castle had once stood, but there was no sign that there had ever
been a castle there.
"I'm not sure," Jarlath said, his voice a little shaky. "The castle has vanished, as I expected it to, but what I don't understand is - down in the depths of it as we were - why we weren't left buried deep under the solid rock that must have been there before the castle existed. But... Hey, I thought I just saw Carola's eyelids flicker!" He felt for her pulse again. "Her heart has restarted. She's alive!" "Thank the Goddess!" Belinda said. "I don't know what sort of condition she will be in when she comes round - if she comes round," Jarlath warned her. "Though her pulse now seems strong and steady."
