Of course that was a joke. A joke done in absolutely poor taste, yes. But
a joke nonetheless. For you see - dear, lonely, and utterly repulsive
reader - Fred’s father had fought that dreaded reptilian freak before and
had failed. Miserably. And to cope with that horrid failure that had so drastically marred his reputation from then on, Fred’s father had habitually beat the living crap out of his hamsters, dogs, cats, and especially Fred. Or at least that’s what Fred told his psycho-therapists so they’d give him lots of ‘happy pills’. “Of course you know I’m kidding, you windy old ass-goblin!” he continued heckling his father. “You couldn’t slay a dragon if your life depended on it! You are a stupid, stupid man! I fart in your general direction, stupid man!” He turned back to the King’s men. “Look,” he said. “I’ve changed my mind. I’ve got a good gig here. Life is peaceful and it’s all dandy. I’m afraid you’re going to have to tell the King to find some other sap to do his dirty work. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have an iron ingot that needs to be pounded flat.” And he went back to toiling over the forge.Fred’s father burst into a torrent of sorrow-laden tears and bolted out the door. The King’s men sobbed as well and, holding each other for comfort, they left the humble smithy with their heads downcast and their spirits sunk.
