Astra liked hot food, and after her initial cautious nibble she quickly
ate her snack. The coolness of the mint made a pleasant contrast to the
filling, preventing the highly spiced patty of minced meat from being too
overpowering. She wondered if it was a local speciality, since she had had
nothing similar elsewhere in Hespan.
The snack took the edge off her hunger, but it had the drawback of accentuating her thirst. She felt that she could hardly make a second request, though, whether of that child or another. But the boy must have guessed that, if she wanted food, then she was also likely to want something to drink with which to wash it down. Without having to be prompted, he took a waterbottle out of his basket, edged along the bench and with a shy smile offered her the bottle. Astra drank about half of the water before giving the bottle back to the boy. She hoped that he would not go hungry or thirsty as a result of his generosity. But they were all supposed to be getting lunch later on, weren't they, so she probably needn't worry about that. Presumably the child had brought some food and drink along just in case he felt in need of something during the course of the morning. Now that she was no longer hungry or thirsty, Astra found herself getting a little sleepy. It was a warm room, and the drone of the amuzgar's voice was rather monotonous. She struggled to remain awake. It would look very rude of her if anyone was to notice that their visitor had dozed off.
