Astra allowed her attention to wander away from the amuzgar's
sermon, hoping that the threat that she might have to remain with the
religious gathering into the afternoon would not be fulfilled. Otherwise
she feared that it would be a very boring day, with lunch offering only a
slight relief if she was expected to talk to the amuzgar during it.
She returned to her earlier musing about the set-up here. From the look of them, the adults in this chapel almost certainly aren't themselves alchemists but are farm workers. I'd envisaged the alchemists' base as being miles from anywhere, but I suppose that wasn't really likely. Alchemists need to eat, just like anyone else. It looks like there must be a large farm nearby, maybe even a whole village, supporting them. Whether the alchemists came to an existing settlement, or the settlement grew up to supply their needs, I don't know. Not that it matters. I wonder why Boomer brought me to a religious meeting of all things? I suppose it was somewhere where I wouldn't see anything that I shouldn't, and where there would be plenty of people to keep an eye on me. Meanwhile she idly leafed though the book, not expecting it to be very interesting but at least likely to be preferable to following a sermon concerning a religion that she didn't believe in.
