"What do you mean?" Astrid asked.
"When I first met you, a couple of years ago, I had the benefit of having been enchanted by a friendly mage to be six feet tall, when originally I had been only half that height. That damnable portal undid that, and I was ashamed. I wanted you to remember me as I had been, and to believe that it was my true form." "I see. Well, try not to worry about it," Astrid said. "It really doesn't matter since, as I said, I have more important matters than suitors on my mind at the moment." She felt greatly encouraged that now both Velus and the newcomer seemed to be telling the same story about the portal. Surely she she should go through it herself now, since there seemed an excellent chance that it would transform her back into Fred? "You can't spurn me now, after I ventured into these caves to look for you," the midget objected, breaking in on her thoughts. "I didn't ask you to do that," Astrid pointed out. "And you will find out very shortly that I too am not all that I seem." With that, she crouched low to avoid triggering the trap, and ran towards the portal.
