A diffuse light was coming from somewhere, allowing Astra to see her
surroundings.
She wasn't about to risk going down the tunnel and meeting whoever was
producing the
very beautiful, but decidedly strange, pipe music that she could hear.
Aquilarians
were familiar with all the ancient Greek legends, including that of Pan
and his pipes. So she explored
the garden instead.
The garden was a big surprise. She hadn't thought it possible for green plants to grow in the total absence of sunlight, but there they were, growing luxuriantly: grassy lawns, flowers, shrubs, even full-grown trees. Whoever the gardener was, he (or she) obviously had a magic touch. And, Astra realised, magic might well be the operative word. Having examined as much of the garden as she could from outside, she entered it and walked along one of the stone paths. The flowers and trees were beautiful, and it seemed a very peaceful place. As she walked Astra began to feel increasingly sleepy. There seemed to be no harm in taking a nap, for there was no sign of danger, and she knew she could rely on her senses to wake her at the slightest noise. Lying down on the grass, she closed her eyes and almost immediately fell asleep. Some hours later, she awakened...
