Expecting the Worst

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 48116

"No!" Astra exclaimed. "Please don't let it happen again." Had the light been better, she would have seen the look of horror on her own face echoed on Fred's.

For whatever reason, it did not happen again, at least not immediately. Indeed, for what seemed to them like a very long time - though in reality it was probably no more than a minute or two - nothing seemed to happen at all, except that the voice of Vincent slowly drew ever closer.

Fred and Astra did not attempt to flee. After the collars had appeared round their necks, they felt sure that it would be futile. If Vincent could track them to this spot, then he could track them anywhere.

Obviously Vincent felt the same way; otherwise he would surely have approached more stealthily. They could not make out if he was reciting some incantation, was talking to a silent companion, or was simply talking to himself.

Then:

  1. There was a terrible gurgling scream, tailing off into silence. Had Vincent encountered some deadly guardian of the tomb?
  2. Their clothes and weapons vanished.
  3. From one of the nearby hallways, a new voice whispered: "You two, come this way. Hurry, before it's too late!"
  4. There were sounds of magical combat. What had Vincent run into? More importantly for them, who would win?
