Hesht's Idea

"So are you suggesting that we should climb this tree, and then jump down when we're over the far side? I realise that the ground should be fairly soft after all the rain, but even so surely we'd break our necks if we did that?"

"I've g-got a rope in my pack. We could tie it to the top of the tree and then climb down it."

Astra was about to ask why they hadn't used the rope to help them cross the previous stream, when she recalled that there had been no nearby bushes or any other objects to which it could have been fastened. "Let's walk upstream and take a look at this tree, then, and see if your plan might work," she said instead. "The tree will need to overhang the far bank, and your rope will need to be long enough to leave a drop at the bottom of no more than ten feet or so."

1. After examining the tree, Astra agrees that they should try Hesht's idea.
2. Astra may be impulsive at times, but she doesn't have a death wish. It looks far too dangerous to her. For one thing, she isn't sure that the tree is securely enough rooted to take their weight.
3. The tree has been blown down by a storm since Hesht came this way last. It now offers them a bridge - albeit a rather precarious one - across the ravine.
