Not only was Amy kept from sleep by feeling so tired but also by her
concern over her "sisters". Worrying won't help them, she told
herself. And anyway they did both briefly come round just enough to
manage to drink some of the water. Surely that's a good sign? And our fire
is burning well, so they should keep nice and warm.
Soon after that, she did at last manage to doze off. But it seemed like only a moment later that someone was shaking her shoulder, and she struggled back to consciousness. "Wha-? Who? Where?" she began, before she became sufficiently awake to recognise Fred looking down at her and to remember where she was. "I'm afraid that I can't stay awake any longer," he told her, "so you will have to keep watch for awhile. Wake me up at once if anything untoward happens. Your sisters are still out, but I think that it is more of a normal sleep than unconsciousness now." From the glow on the eastern horizon, Amy could tell that it must be nearly dawn. Her stomach rumbled, but she knew that there was no immediate prospect of food. At least her hunger would help her to keep awake. As the dawn light strengthened:
