Astra was naturally reluctant to attack the ship. Apart from the risk of
injuring her companions in doing so, any serious damage to the vessel
would jeopardise the chances of their ever reaching land safely. But she
felt that she had no alternative now but to follow through on her threat.
A crossbow bolt richocheted harmlessly off one wing as she dived, relying
on her speed to prevent any shots being accurate enough to pose a real
danger to her. The balloon was by now draped across her back, as it was
some time since she had put any hot air into it, so that it did not slow
her down.
In the adrenalin rush of the moment - or whatever the dragon equivalent to adrenalin was - she had forgotten all about Checkers. But the Glider could have achieved comparatively little in any case, so it was probably better that she should stay clear for the time being and not put herself at risk. Astra had never previously attempted to flame a target whilst approaching it at such speed, and she hoped that she would be accurate. She was. Her fiery breath caught the mainsail, and it and its rigging were swiftly incinerated. The mast itself, being much sturdier, was no more than charred by her quick "burst".
