"...and they will not hesitate to rip us to pieces," Astra
explained. "The lions' skin are as tough as stone, and our weapons would
be useless against them."
"Then how are we supposed to deal with them?" Fred asked uncertainly.
"Well, there are only two of them," Astra said slowly. "They are the
watchers; guardians to keep any from entering the wyrm's lair. Belinda
and Carola are counting on me, Fred...the only way to get in is to sneak
past the lions without making a sound."
"Won't they see us?" Fred asked.
"They should be sleeping this time of day," Astra said. "They will be
relying on their hearing...we'll have to be very, very careful." Fred
nodded, and the two of them began making their way across the lake,
straight toward the stone palace.
Upon arriving, they pulled themselves up onto the cold stone walkway
leading to the palace. It was a great silver archway, covered with
various runes that were unrecognizable by Fred. There were two pillars on
both sides of the entrance, and on top of each sat a mighty lion, resting
and oblivious...for now.
"We're going to have to be very, very careful," Astra whispered as they
approached the entrance. Fred nodded, watching his step. Both of them
stopped suddenly as a shadow was visible nearby, and a chill ran up Fred's
spine. His fear was dispelled an instant later, however, when a small
child walked out in front of them.
"Who are you supposed to be?" the little boy asked. He couldn't be any
more than seven years of age.
"Fred," whispered Fred. "And this is Astra."
"Who?" asked the boy aloud, yawning. Both Fred and Astra winced,
looking toward the lions to make certain that they had not been disturbed
by the noise. It appeared that they were still safe, however.
"Never heard of you," the little boy told them. "I think I should tell
the lions!"
"What?!" Fred asked in shock, as the boy turned to shout. Astra dashed
toward the boy, quick to react...but would she be in time?
