Pacific, but Prepared

Fred was not aware that there was a mine here. He had no wish to fight the man with the lantern if there were no need. Since he did not whether the man was a minion of the dragon, a bystander, or oppressed, he did not bring up the dragon. He said simply, "I am not a miner. I have other work to do here." He held his sword in a defensive position, ready to parry, but trying to appear as unthreatening to the man as possible.

1. The man asked, "And what is this other work?"
2. At that moment, a tiny beak gaped out of Fred's pocket, begging for food.
