Unless the castle layout had changed even more radically than was already
evident, the way to the throne room had to be to the right. So Exotica
would have to go past the creature. At least it was blind and didn't seem
very fast-moving, so it oughtn't to be too difficult to get by if she
could only summon sufficient nerve to make the attempt.
Filled with a mixture of revulsion and pity for the ruined chambermaid, she summoned up her courage and attempted to dash past it, only for the slippery floor to cause her feet to slide from under her. She came down heavily on her backside. Fortunately she was not hurt, and she quickly scrambled to her feet and retrieved her torch from where it had fallen next to her. There was a red-brown stain all the way down the back of her white gown now, to add to the splashes on its front and in her hair from the drops falling from the ceiling. The creature had heard her fall.
