Because the gondola was slung directly beneath her body, even by twisting
her neck as far down as she could whilst still maintaining level flight,
Astra could only manage to see its front half. No-one was visible in that
portion, and she could see that instead of the gondola being level it now
slanted at an angle of about forty-five degrees towards the rear. Fearing
the worst, Astra sent: Are you all right?
To her great relief, Sartoma responded at once: Yes, I think so, though we're not very comfortable at the moment, and our poor shipwrecked mariner seems to be scared almost out of his wits. With the tilt of the gondola, we've all slid to the back. That was very nasty turbulence that we hit. Not helped by my having almost dozed off, and so being very slow to react. I was afraid that the gondola was going to hit the water before I could level out. It was a near thing. I think that we must all have dozed off till the turbulence woke us, or we would have warned you before we got so low. The worst of it is that, when we were in free fall, the forward guy-rope attaching us to you somehow seems to have got itself snagged round the bottom of the gondola, which is why we're at such an uncomfortable angle...
