Astra did not intend to eavesdrop. Reading someone's mind uninvited struck
her as a rude and rather sneaky thing to do, except in case of dire need
or if the person was known to be an enemy. But engrossed in her vision,
and somewhere halfway between sleeping and waking, she became aware of a
mind that was open to her, and suddenly she found herself inside that mind
without quite being sure how it had happened. At first she assumed that it
must belong to one of the inhabitants of the Glider city.
I wonder how long it will take to get to Heaven, Jan was wondering. I expected it to be quicker than this. Is it possible that the saints and the angels do not control the demon, as I had assumed, but that the demon controls them, and so I am being taken to the other place? No, that is a blasphemous thought. Put it out of your head, Jan. A demon could never control an angel. But if you think bad thoughts, it's not too late for the saints and angels - who know everything - to decide that you should go to the other place rather than Heaven, and let the demon have you. Realisation dawned on Astra, and she felt a mixture of embarrassment at her unintended eavesdropping, amusement and annoyance. Herself a demon, indeed!
