Astra Eavesdrops

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 46514

Astra did not intend to eavesdrop. Reading someone's mind uninvited struck her as a rude and rather sneaky thing to do, except in case of dire need or if the person was known to be an enemy. But engrossed in her vision, and somewhere halfway between sleeping and waking, she became aware of a mind that was open to her, and suddenly she found herself inside that mind without quite being sure how it had happened. At first she assumed that it must belong to one of the inhabitants of the Glider city.

I wonder how long it will take to get to Heaven, Jan was wondering. I expected it to be quicker than this. Is it possible that the saints and the angels do not control the demon, as I had assumed, but that the demon controls them, and so I am being taken to the other place? No, that is a blasphemous thought. Put it out of your head, Jan. A demon could never control an angel. But if you think bad thoughts, it's not too late for the saints and angels - who know everything - to decide that you should go to the other place rather than Heaven, and let the demon have you.

Realisation dawned on Astra, and she felt a mixture of embarrassment at her unintended eavesdropping, amusement and annoyance. Herself a demon, indeed!

  1. She managed to withdraw from Jan's mind without his realising that she had been there.
  2. She was not yet very skilled at telepathy. Jan became aware of her presence in his mind, and shrieked in fear.
  3. Then she realised that, having first been engrossed in the vision and almost asleep, and then listening to Jan's thoughts, she had neglected for some time to heat the air in the balloon, and so they were much lower than they should have been.
