Lord Frederigo D'Honaire uneasily assessed his enemy. He wished he was facing a human
rather than another damned elf. What kind of elves were these, anyway? Everyone knew
that elves were tall and light-haired and this one was short with raven-black hair. Elves had
a reputation for pride and secrecy, keeping to their vast and alien lands in the west. They
seldom ventured into the lands of men and never more than one at a time. They had usually
come to give prophetic warnings or visit with holy men and mages. Yet here was a group of
six elves along with three humans come to slay a dragon! If these were truly elves, Lord
Fred had seen more elves in one day than anyone he knew had in their entire lifetimes.
Then again, Tarin had certainly proved himself a valiant warrior. This female elf, Ia'adoire, seemed too to have the eyes of a valiant warrior. As he had earlier for the pair of strange dark-eyed elves, he felt for a moment the sense of kinship that a brave warrior feels for another brave warrior, even an enemy. But he then wondered if the elf was not another mage, like the one called Jenny, and was playing with his mind. Ia'adoire, meanwhile, saw the emotions of kinship struggling with distrust in her analog brother's eyes and shook her head inwardly. She wondered if she would have been as paranoid and belligerent as this Fred had been so far in her old life. She suspected, sadly, that the answer would have been yes. On the other hand, the fact that she had been not that different from him once did give her a decided advantage. He knew nothing of her way of being, but she knew him very well and could guess quite easily how he would react in certain situations. On the other hand, he might not be as similar to her former self as she would think.
