Nothing Suddenly Happens

Fred was not used to nothing happening, especially if it happened suddenly. Things happening was the norm. Often quite unexpected and exciting things. This nothing happening was new. Fred went into a tense, expectant crouch, looking around warily. Silence. Bruno the chicken pecked the ground and paced. No one entered. No door appeared. Nothing changed into anything. Slowly, Fred relaxed.

"Well," he said aloud, half afraid he would break the spell of calm. Nothing continued to happen. "This is rather nice," he decided. He sat down to rest, enjoying a full hour of nothing. He took the time to explore his thoughts on his life so far, his quest, chickens, and nothing in general.

About that time...

1. Fred scratched an itch.
2. The chicken died.
3. Nothing happened some more.
4. Fred spontaneously combusted.
