Unless anyone is totally opposed to it, I'm going to take us down as
low as I dare and look for survivors, Astra decided. I can't stand
the thought that I might be leaving people to a horrible death when I
might have saved them.
She headed towards the ship and downwards, but soon realised that there was a problem. I can't take us down too close to the the ship, she told Sartoma. The heat from the fire is creating too much lift on the balloon for me to be able to combat it. Besides, even if I could somehow bring us low enough over the ship for you to use the golden rope, it would be dangerously hot and the basket or balloon might catch fire from a spark. I think that the best I can do is to circle the ship at a safe distance and look for anyone in the water. The fire should provide enough light for that, especially for dragon eyes. That sounds like the best plan, Sartoma agreed. I can't believe that there could be anyone left alive on board by now, anyway. It's an inferno. Anyone who was able to would have jumped overboard before this. So Astra took them round the ship at a distance of a hundred paces or so and at a height of about thirty paces.
