Fred ran through the forest all that night and all the next day. He
laughed and giggled and decapitated small furry animals as he went. He
found himself heading northeast and within two days of leaving the
Southern Caves and murdering the poor bespelled drunkard Bruno, he walked
into the town of Revivrus. He walked into the town's square and sat down
upon a bench by the Pole***.
"Wha' cha doin' 'ere?" came a voice. Fred turned left and then right but saw nothing. Then he looked behind him and saw the biggest, meanest-looking man with the brightest red nose he had ever seen. "I sed," continued the man who smelled of too much mead and slurred his words. "Why ju in mine bensh?" Fred stared at the man, an obvious drunk, most probably the town drunk, and a feeling a great remorse struck him truly from within his deepest spirit. He ran from that square screaming and crying, whimpering and yelling. The townesfolke who witnessed him thought him mad. Two days later, and after many tears and with a very sore throat, Fred walked up the steps of the House of ARk-Ham. He was within the lands of an independent duchy east of Allaria, and within the seaside town of GOt- Ham. Upon knocking on the door a tall man opened it. "Goooood eeeeevening," said the man. "My name is Jeeves, I am the Domo of this House. May I help you?" Fred, who had been shifting through various degrees of paranoia, fear, guilt, and murderous rage for the last four days told the man everything about Bruno. "There, there," said Jeeves. "We have just the program for you, come on in." six months later... The messenger had just left Caemlyn and rode southwards down the King's Way. King Emry, meanwhile, stood staring at the parchment in his hands, his wife, good Queen Savoy tried to keep her eyes from crying. "Poor Frederigo," said the Queen. "Damnations," murmured the King. "At least now we know for certain why the Dragon has continued its predation of our fields and maidens. I shall send word to Montfort this very day." "Fred's family will be glad that he is alive--" "But heartbroken over his condition." "And we still need to deal with the Beast of the Southern Caves," said the Queen. "The Dragon-Hunter next on the list is Lord Griffin, he is still studying at the Academie." "He is a good man from a good House. The Family Rourke is well known for their support of their Duke, and of their King." "The stage shall be set immediately for a new Sending; the majordomo shall make the arrangements, I shall speak with young Griffin Rourke myself." And with that the King and the Queen of Allaria, the Great Kingdom, moved the wheels that set into motion the sending of yet another knight into the Southern Caves of the Shreken Mountains. ***the Pole: most towns within the Havnheim and near-Havnheim realms share a common blueprint; this includes the center of town, the Square, which is a bare dirt plaza. A few societies do diverge from this common cultural form, but the Towne Circles of the Independent Duchy of Grezden and the Towne Quadrangles of the Numero Kingdom are far from the trend. As to the Pole, it is a pole made of indegenous trees, usually cut from a single large tree, that is set up in the center of the square and danced about at certain times of the year. The dances include laudes to the goddeses of Beauty and Makeup, jubilations to the gods of testosterone, and informational preludes from the Matrons of the Avon Guild.
