Fred awoke, and immediately recalled what had happened. He, a knight,
supposedly able to control his emotions in any situation, had fainted! How
humiliating. But it was no use berating himself, he decided. What had
happened had happened, and could not be undone.
He began to reflect on what Eleanor had told him, but quickly realised that he could make neither head nor tail of it. He was unsure whether this was due to the limitations of his own intellect and experience, or whether what she had told him was genuinely nonsensical, as he would prefer to believe. He decided that he could use his time more profitably by examining his surroundings. He lay on a large and amazingly comfortable bed. The room he was in contained a number of strange pieces of furniture; the only items that he was able to recognise, other than the bed itself, were a bedside table and a chair. Luckily from his current position, all he could see through the window was sky. That at least was familiar enough; it reassured him a little to realise that cloud formations had not changed over the millenia, even if almost everything else had done.
