While Lily hummed some sort of haunting melody to herself, Astra
eyeballed the two men with suspicion. Red seemed fairly quiet, lounging
beside the cart and occasionally moaning quietly. He seemed to be in
great pain. Perhaps unwisely on Scarface's part, the other one left to
guard them was Bill.
"Say, Red." Bill said swarthily. "I tell you what, I'm sick of Scarface
bossing us around. Who does he think he is?" "Mmph?" Red shrugged, wincing. "And that Mike - always flauntin' how intelligent and sophisticated he is, just cuz he's cityborn. I jes' hate his guts." "Mmph." Red nodded in agreement. "Well, ol' chum, I think I gots me a plan. We have us here a cart full o' gold an' jools an' dainty lasses ripe for the plunder. What say we jes' take our share right here an' now, an' leave those two fools to themselves?" "Mmph!" Red said, shaking his head. "Scrface n' Thief's Guild, mmn. Ell find's. Cut throat, mnn." "Don't tell me ye're scared, ol' chum?" "No, don wann die, mnn." "Get ready." Astra whispered to Lily. "We have to escape now, while we can." "Well, that's too bad." Bill was saying. Astra saw him suddenly tower over Red, who looked up in fear as a club caved in his cranium. "Now, Lily!" Astra hissed. "If you can do it, do it now!" She wasn't sure if the waifish Lily could really break the thick, uncomfortable hemp rope which bound them. But with a snap the ropes burst from Lily's wrists. The witch-girl went for Astra's bindings when the shadow of Bill fell upon them. "What's goin' on 'ere?" Bill roared, hefting his bloody club. He swung at Lily, who rolled aside with a squeal, falling off the cart.
