Immediately after nodding, Melissa remembered that Fred couldn't see her,
since she was sitting behind him, and felt a little foolish.
Then Fred spoke again: "Unfortunately, due to our inability to stay the night in Tialad's Crossing, as I'd planned, we are going to have to make camp in these woods. I'd sooner have kept going till we got out of the forest, but we are too tired. Besides, it will soon get too dark to see the trail. I'm hoping that we might come to a clearing before we lose the last of the light, as that would be preferable to being closely surrounded by trees, as if something attacked we would at least have some chance of seeing it first. I'm in two minds over whether we should light a fire. It would frighten away any wild animals that might pose a threat, and also give us a bit of light to see by. But if there should happen to be anything worse than animals in these woods, then a fire may alert them to our presence. I'm afraid that it won't be safe for us both to sleep at once. I'll take the first watch, and let you get some rest. Then when I estimate that the night is half over, I'll wake you."
