The barmaid put her hands on her substantial hips, as the villagers behind
her muttered. "The lady's water is free," she told Fred, "but I expect you
to pay for your mead and for the food. You're not the first customer to
claim that he's been robbed in an attempt to get out of paying."
"But I'm a knight of the realm," Fred spluttered, deeply affronted. "I wouldn't lie to you." But the barmaid and the villagers did not seem impressed. Melissa rummaged in the pocket of her slacks. "I don't suppose that this would be any good?" she asked. Fred and the barmaid stared with equal incomprehension at the rather crumpled rectangular piece of paper that Melissa had produced. On it was some printing in green ink, including someone's portrait and the number "20". "What's this?" the barmaid wanted to know. "Money," Melissa replied. "Not here, it isn't. I've never seen anything like that. If you can't pay, you have two choices: you can do the washing up to pay off your debt, or my friends here will throw you in the stocks."
