Astra had returned to her dragon form before going to sleep. Though she
now had little difficulty in maintaining her human form all the time she
was awake, she as yet had not developed the ability to do so whilst
asleep. Thus she wished to avoid the disturbed night that would result
from being woken up when she changed back. (She had discovered that it was
impossible to sleep through a transformation.)
On falling asleep, she had a vivid dream. As in her earlier vision, she saw the land of the Gliders. [39970] It was night-time there too (though some hours later in the night), and if she had had no better than human vision she would have been able to see very little. But a dragon's eyes can cope with near total darkness. She was viewing a road from high above, though whether it was the same one as before she could not tell. Beside the road, at the point where it emerged from a forest, stood a hut. Outside the hut two male Gliders were standing, with their backs to the forest, peering down the road. Astra formed the impression that they were border guards. She managed to "zoom in" until she seemed to be only a dozen yards away from the Gliders. Now she could clearly hear their voices in her mind. In this isolated spot, and with most of the population of the Dolomite League no doubt being asleep in any case, she could hear only the two of them. Thus it was much easier to disentangle what was being said.
