Okay, fine, I can see that these are people of means (who are worried about not being able to pay for a meal?!) and can afford a live guide, but . . .

The ones known as Cuthbert and Joan claim to be human beings, but they’re not . . .not like the humans I’d come to know on Earth!

They don’t . . don’t constantly ask needless questions or make inane observations. I mean, humans I always ran into (including Arthur), constantly talk without end. Had come to believe that they did that to stop themselves from thinking, but . . .
