Fred listened to the entire exchange between wolf and fox and bear and the
pirates. He still couldn't find himself trusting them, not Loam, not
Carradene. Taylor took the fox den aside and they waited on the beach.
Moran stood with the bear clan as well. No one wanted to go anywhere, not
with the wolves taking the ship. The pirates weren't happy, but they were
severely outnumbered. Fred followed the wolves as far as they'd let him,
to the edge of the water and no more. The pirates went into one dingy
while some wolves used the other. Their goal was the ship.
Fred wondered if the pirates would try and make a move while on their ship. He wondered if the wolves would do the same and sail far from this island prison. He wondered if he had picked up some kind of allergy or simply ticks because for the last few hours the fur on his belly itched like the dickens. Then he heard a scream! It did not come from the dingies, it did not come from the ship. It came from behind him. Upon whirling about Fred saw the strange golem things of the Western Alliance. They were moving about strangely, as if possessed. They were pointing their metal pipes at each other and great bursts of flame and heat erupted from them, injuring or killing whatever it touched! What black magic is this?!? wondered Fred. "Charlie Unit one!" screamed one of them into his talking box. "This is Bravo three, we are taking casualties! Man against man we are firing at will, malfunctioning, or our circuits are being rerouted! Help us!" Fred watched as the man/thing/golem then dropped the talking box and raised his own metal pipe to his head. With a burst of red the golem fell dead, at his own hand! Soon there was discernable yelling amidst the screams of the golem. Fred could hear it as clearly as he could the flashes of fire. Even as the bizarre monsters continued their self-destruction, they were screaming out: "All your Base are belong to us!" And then there was only one golem left. It did not kill itself, it did not rant and rage. It stood utterly still in the clearing along the beach. Fred shuddered as he looked upon its visage. The face of the creature, half flesh / half metal, was smiling.
