The Fight on the Stair

The guy with the dark beard dressed in black and silver must be Corwin, and the younger man with him must be his brother. His name suddenly comes back to you: Random, that was it. They are hard-pressed by the four riders who are pursuing them down the stairs. Supporting the riders there are many more men on foot not that much further behind. Ahead of Corwin and Random, and almost at the sanctuary offered by a great arch, shining like alabaster and carved with Tritons, sea nymphs, mermaids and dolpins, is a dark- haired girl. You recall that she is their sister Deirdre.

You can dimly see people on the far side of the arch. You remember now that the arch is the entrance to Rebma, the underwater realm that is a mirror image of Amber. Here Corwin will seek to walk its copy of the primal Pattern that is in Amber, in the hope that it will restore his damaged memory.

Fortunately the combatants don't seem to be taking any notice of you, and the great staircase is wide enough that you can keep out of their way. Ordinarily two swordsmen on foot would have no chance against four men on horseback. But these two are princes of Amber, with almost supernatural fighting skill and with reflexes and strength to match. They dispose of the four riders and make it through the arch just ahead of the rest of their enemies, where they are taken into custody.
