Astra had been right about something turning up. Spotting something by the
lakeshore, they investigated. It appeared to be drift wood. They both
blinked. Surely that wasn't possible? Sure enough, though, it was drift wood. The Spirits seemed to be making good of their promise. Ok, then. They had the food and they had the wood. They still lacked the means of creating fire. No need to worry about that for the moment, though. Neither of them were hungry. Boredom was their greatest problem. There wasn't much to look at as the plain was, well, plain. Just the grass, a few isolated trees and bushes. Any wildlife there had been had gone, though they did once see a vulture picking at the carcass of... something. Whatever it had been, it was not a pretty sight. The lake was just an endless expanse of blue. The jungle had almost disappeared over the eastern horizon and the mountains ahead of them were still too far to make out much detail. Fred was vainly looking around for some variety in their surroundings when he noticed a grey smudge on the southern horizon. It's smoke from a wildfire! There's hardly any wind, though, and whatever there was seemed to be blowing in a easterly direction. Fred and Astra were safe, for the moment. It was probably the reason why all the animals had disappeared.
