Astra waited by the portal for what she estimated as about half an hour,
but it did not change again. Perhaps it would if she waited for long
enough, but she decided that she could not afford to stay where she was
any longer. Back on the tropical island it had not mattered that, over the
last year, her clothing had been reduced to rags (her armour hadn't been,
of course, but that had been much too hot to wear). But in the cold and
clammy fog, it was a different matter. By now she was wet and shivering.
Though the short distance downhill that she had gone earlier had made little difference to the fog, she still hoped that it was really low cloud covering the high ground and that if she went down further she would eventually come out of it. At the worst, at least walking briskly would warm her up a little. The alternative was to go through the portal, of course, but conditions in the desert would be much worse even than this. So she turned her back on the portal and headed down the gentle slope.
