Astra wondered for a moment whether it would be wise, if she really
did have a latent magical ability, to travel to an area that
apparantly was still "contaminated" with residual magic. Perhaps it would
cause her own magic to become more evident? But from what Tregennis had
told her, it seemed almost certain that Irios's magic would be very
different in nature to her own, so perhaps she need not worry that it
would have any effect on her.
She suddenly remembered that Tregennis was an Allarian. As such, he might well have reasonably up to date news from adjacent Aqualaria. She wasn't sure whether she could rely on what Turik had told her about the situation there. If he suspected that she really was Astra, then he might have made up his story of the possibility of assassination attempts on the royal family in the hope of provoking a tell-tale reaction from her. Of course, he had covered himself by saying that the story was no more than rumour, so that it would be impossible to prove that he was lying. "I've been away from home a long time," she said, as casually as she could manage. "Have there been any noteworthy events in Aqualaria in the last few months?" "Well, Princess Astra is missing. It is believed that she went to try to kill the dragon who lives under the Shreken, but at the time when I had to leave home to start my journey to Eramini there had been no word of her, though she had been gone for several weeks." (He had been travelling for too long for the news to have reached him that the dragon had been killed by Sir Korval, that Lord Fred had reported seeing Astra, but that Astra had mysteriously vanished from her chains before she could be freed after the dragon's death.) "Really?" Astra said, trying to look appropriately surprised at the news that she was missing. "Turik did not mention that when we were talking about my homeland. Maybe the news has not yet reached him, though that seems surprising given that he seems so well informed. Anything else of note?"
