Astra must have dozed off whilst on watch, for the next thing she knew
she was awakened by the crackle of flames. Their fire had set alight the
nearby undergrowth, which was tinder dry, and the flames were spreading
too rapidly to extinguish. She woke Fred, and the two of them took refuge
first on the beach and then, as the fire increased to the extent that even
there
was no longer safe, in the waters of the lake.
"All that effort to get dry and now we're soaking wet again," said Fred, only his head showing as they trod water some thirty metres offshore. "And we've lost the shelter I made to protect us, too," he added. "Still, even before the fire it was a warm night," said Princess Astra. "I think your fear that we might catch a chill was unnecessary. I apologise for dozing off, though. This is all my fault." Lord Fred, being a noble man in both senses of the phrase, naturally forgave her.
